Piercings are subjected to infection during recovery and healing process. The intent of this text it to introduce you to the importance of healing and prevention of infection. Piercing is treated in a way that in your body, trough out entire length of the piercing, are created epithelial cells which protect the body from foreign objects. Epithelial cell create a layer of skin within a pierce. This process usually lasts between 6 and 8 weeks. When a layer is formed, piercing can shrink jewelry. This layer can be easily ripped or squeezed out. Do not force the rotation of jewelry, instead first sprinkle the piercing with warm water in order for skin to expand with more ease and jewelry to rotate. When epithelial layer has formed you need to enable it to grow stronger. This process usually lasts between 6 to 12 months. After that, piercing is more flexible and easier to move.
Complications depend on the part of body in question. Ear cartilages aren’t cured as fast as ear lap. Reason for it is a different type of tissue and also during sleep we exercise more pressure on ear cartilage then on ear lap. Tongue piercing – this area swells, excreting fluids but it’s very quickly treated because the tongue has excellent blood flow. Nipple pierces for women can be a problem if later on in life they are planning on breastfeeding. Infections can appear or damage of milk paths in the breast. Navel piercing can be infected if you wear thick/slim clothes that do not allow for airflow
If you’re planning on keeping your pierce it’s very important not to remove it until it heals. Most pierces take between 3 – 12 months in order to complete the healing process and in that period it’s not good to remove the jewelry because there is a chance the hole will close. When a pierce is strong enough, if you remove the jewelry, the hole won’t close but it will shrink. All piercings exert lymph extract during the renewal process. This extract is sticky and white or gray-white color. It dries into a crusty formation around opened pierce and on jewelry.
– pain, swelling, burning (area around the pierce is warm or hot on touch), excess redness and extraction of green-yellow liquid (mud). If you notice signs on infection do not remove the jewelry, report to your piercer or doctor. If you remove the jewelry the hole will close, and if there was an infection it will close it as well which can lead to abscess formation.
Possible symptoms of sensitivity when cleaning a piercing:
– redness, irritation, itch, burning sensation. Too much cleaning of the piercing can lead to a red, dried and cracked piercing.
Symptoms of jewelry sensitivity are usually manifested right away and include change in skin tone.
If your body rejects piercing, the jewelry can become visible through skin. If you notice that your body began rejecting the jewelry, visit us and we’ll examine if it needs removal. In any case it’s best to react in due time, otherwise you can be left with a scar.
– wild meat can appear on a pierce if you stumble on something with your pierce or if you sleep on it, also if you wear clothes that irritate the pierce, if you’re using perfumes, sunscreen, perfumed soaps, … around the pierce. After piercing the tongue it can swell and for that reason it’s very important to follow the instructions. Swelling can begin right after the piercing and can last between 1-2 weeks. Tongue piercings heals between 6-8 weeks and during that whole period it’s necessary to maintain it and keep it clean. During the healing period you can’t play with your piercing or touch it with dirty hands. For maintaining the pierce you use HEXORAL diluted with water 1 x day (best at night before going to sleep) for washing out and disinfection of mouth cavity. Mix it a bit in your mouth and then spit it out (never swallow). After every meal, drink or a cigarette, wash out your mouth cavity with water. Buy a new toothbrush because your old one is little bacterial heaven. For reducing the swelling of tongue you need to drink a lot of ice and in a follow way: fill the glass of ice with little water, drink from straw keeping the water in your month for a couple of seconds and then spit it out. Repeat the procedure multiple times per day until the swelling shrinks. Avoid HOT, SALTY AND PEPPERED food during the healing process because they can cause irritation on the tongue and complicate the healing of the pierce. Eat softer foods for first week or two (soup, semolina, corn flour, milk, fruit yogurt,…) everything served cold. Avoid coffee, cigarettes and alcohol. Avoid tongue contact with another person for at least 2 weeks.
